On October 2nd and 3rd, the Orvis Cup fly-fishing competition took place in Prague. The event, now in its fifth consecutive year, has been growing steadily and once again proved to be a great success. Most of the participants were Czech, but anglers from several other countries also joined in. The competition is individual, and fishing is done from boats on the well-stocked Vltava River as it flows right through the center of Prague.
This was my first time attending the event, and I’m certain I’ll be back again next year. The organization was excellent, and the hosts were incredibly welcoming. The atmosphere was friendly, and there was a real sense of sportsmanship among the competitors.
This year the field included around 70 anglers. The catches ranged from small rainbow trout of 25–30 cm to fish weighing up to four kilograms. Due to high water levels, the competition rules were slightly adjusted, but that didn’t stop the fishing. The winner was Milan Cubik, who took home an Orvis rod and reel. Lukas Starichfojto from the Czech youth team finished second, and Jirka Roman came in third. The top ten participants received prizes from Orvis and Redington, and there were additional awards for the top three women in the competition.
Many thanks to the organizers, and congratulations to all participants.
