The Story

Some rods are designed in meeting rooms.
Others are born where they truly matter — on the river, under pressure, with everything on the line.

The story of the NT11 10/11 wt Switch from Guideline began three years ago in Slovenia, when Chris Rownes arrived to chase the river’s ghost. After landing his very first Hucho, a simple idea took hold: what if a rod existed that was built specifically for this kind of fishing—no adaptations, no compromises, just purpose? Similar rods were already on the market, but we believed we could push it further and build something stronger, lighter, and better.

That question didn’t stay theoretical for long.

Chris returned, this time with a prototype in hand. On the Sava River, swinging big flies through cold, heavy water, the rod was tested the only way that counts. When a 120 cm fish came to hand, the message was clear: the concept worked. The blank held, the action made sense, and the rod stayed composed when it mattered most. And this was only the lighter version of this switch rod.

From there, refinement followed. With the immense input and experience of Markus Kaaser and Tellis Katsogiannos, the rod evolved — not toward marketing specs, but toward real-world performance. Every tweak was made with one thing in mind: big fish, big water, big flies – Hucho cannon!

On the Water

I’ve fished and tested most of the Hucho rods currently available on the market, and I can say this with confidence: the NT11 10/11 Switch from Guideline is the lightest of them all — yet remarkably hard to break. I learned that the hard way when a hooked Hucho buried itself under a fallen tree. Expecting the worst, I submerged the rod and pulled as hard as I could. The fish came free, I landed it, and the rod didn’t break.

At 11’6” and rated #10/11, the NT11 never feels oversized; it feels perfectly balanced. It loads effortlessly with heavy Skagit shooting heads and sink tips, delivering clean, controlled casts even when space is tight, and conditions are unforgiving. Thanks to its deep progressive action, the rod turns over large flies with ease and is capable of roll casts exceeding 15 meters — a critical advantage in many Hucho fishing situations.

On the Go

The rod’s six-piece design makes it exceptionally easy to travel with. It fits effortlessly into a large duffel or standard suitcase, removing the usual transport limitations of big-fish rods. That means one thing: freedom. Pack it up and go chase Hucho taimen in Mongolia or Siberia, or hunt the legendary Japanese hucho, Parahucho perry, in the rivers of Japan.

When the Fish Comes

Hucho fishing rarely gives second chances. When a take happens, everything tightens — line, nerves, river. The NT11 bends deep under pressure, but never collapses. Instead, it distributes the load smoothly, giving you the confidence to lean in, stay connected, and apply a surprising amount of power and flex to the fish.

More Than a Specification Sheet

Yes, the NT11 uses advanced materials and modern construction. Yes, the components are robust and clearly chosen for durability. But none of that is what defines this rod.

What defines it is that it has already proven itself — not once, but repeatedly — on one of Europe’s most demanding freshwater predators. When Chris came back again to start this year (2026) with another exceptional fish, it felt less like luck and more like confirmation.

Final Thoughts

The Guideline NT11 10/11 Switch is the result of time, trust, failure, success, and belief — shaped by people who actually fish for Hucho and understand what that pursuit demands.

If you ask me personally—whether you’re already a dedicated Hucho hunter or planning to become one—this is the rod you need. It covers most situations on medium- and large-sized rivers, making it the best all-around choice.

For me, being part of this journey has been deeply personal. Helping turn a shared idea — and a personal dream — into a finished rod has been an absolute pleasure.

The NT11 10/11 Switch is available directly from the Guideline website or through authorised Guideline dealers worldwide.
