Location

Una River flows through northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the town of Bihać, within the Central European Time zone (GMT+2).

Spring

Its main source is the Una Spring near the town of Donja Suvaja at approximately 450 m above sea level.

Characteristics

A fast-flowing karst river of the Adriatic basin, Una averages 20–40 m in width with varied depth, clear water, and sections of rapids, pools, and gravel runs.

Description

Renowned for its beauty and power, the Una flows through deep canyons, waterfalls, and lush forested valleys. Its crystal-clear waters and diverse habitats make it one of Bosnia’s most visually stunning rivers, ideal for both experienced and intermediate anglers.

The river’s strong current, combined with calm pools and slower stretches, creates a dynamic environment for fly fishing. High water quality and abundant aquatic insect life support healthy fish populations, offering both technical challenges and rewarding fishing experiences.

Fish Species

Una is home to robust populations of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta), which thrive in the cooler, oxygen-rich pools. European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) are present in significant numbers, especially in middle and upper river sections.

Additionally, the river supports populations of hucho (Hucho hucho), or Danube salmon, particularly in deeper pools and near slower current areas, providing a thrilling challenge for advanced anglers. The variety of insects along the river ensures steady feeding and excellent opportunities for both dry-fly and nymph fishing.

Type of fishing & equipment

Fly-fishing on Una offers a wide range of techniques. Dry fly fishing is most productive during regular hatches in calm glides and tailouts, while nymphing is highly effective along runs and deeper channels. Streamer fishing can target larger trout or hucho in deep pools and faster water sections.

Season and regulations

Fishing on the Una is open from spring through autumn, with the prime season typically from May to September. Most sections operate under fly-fishing-only and catch-and-release rules, requiring single barbless hooks to protect the river’s populations of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta), European grayling (Thymallus thymallus), and hucho (Hucho hucho). These regulations help preserve the river’s high-quality fishery and ensure sustainable fishing for future seasons.
