Bosnia & Herzegovina can be considered without any doubt as to the fly fishing Mecca of Europe. The variety of rivers and streams in the country is extraordinary. There is a large number of wild fish species to be targeted. The endemic soft-mouth trout (Salmo obtusirostris) and the Marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) can be caught in the Neretva River and its tributaries. The Rivers Pliva, Sana, Sanica & Ribnik are well known to the fly fishing world and rightly so, for their abundance of wild trout and grayling. As its name says, the river Una is the one and only river of this character, not just in the Balkans but in the whole of Europe. It is becoming a popular destination for the mighty Danube Salmon (Hucho hucho) inhabiting its waters. There are also some hidden gems of rivers in Bosnia, some of which I have described below.
The countryside and the natural world in Bosnia are breathtaking. It most certainly offers authentic and sustainable eco-tourism with fantastic traditional cuisine. The people are friendly and highly hospitable; it is a safe travel place. Bosnia and its rivers are not just a true fly fishing paradise; there are various activities for the whole family to enjoy.
I have fished and spent numerous days and months in Bosnia since 2010. I genuinely think that no keen fly fisherman should live without visiting this country and fishing its majestic rivers.
