Bosnia River

Location

Krušnica flows through northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina near Bosanska Krupa. The area follows Central European Time (GMT+1; GMT+2 in summer) and is easily accessible from both Bosnia and neighboring Croatia.

Spring

The river begins at Vrelo Krušnice, a striking karst spring that feeds clear, cold waters into a narrow, fast-flowing stream winding through a scenic valley.

Characteristics

A short mountain river of about 6–7 km, Krušnica is 10–20 metres wide and 1–3 metres deep on average. Its clear, rocky, karst riverbed forms shallow runs and deeper pools, providing ideal conditions for fly-fishing.

Description

Despite its modest length, Krušnica is celebrated for its pristine waters and natural beauty. The upper sections feature wide, shallow runs perfect for sight fishing, while lower sections contain deeper pools and slower flows, providing habitat for larger trout. The combination of clear water, abundant insects, and varied river structure makes Krušnica a highly rewarding destination for anglers seeking both challenge and scenic surroundings.

Fish Species

The river supports healthy populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which thrive in its nutrient-rich, well-oxygenated waters. European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is also present in certain sections, adding variety to the river’s fish community. Hucho (Hucho hucho) is also present in the river, especially in its lower parts, before it joins the Una.

Type of fishing & equipment

Krušnica is ideal for a range of fly-fishing techniques. Dry fly fishing is particularly effective during insect hatches, while nymphing produces reliable results along the river’s runs and riffles. Streamer fishing can also be productive in the deeper pools when targeting larger trout.
