I like to think of Slovenia as my second home. It is often referred to as the New Zealand of the Balkans. And for a good reason! Its diversity of rivers draining in the Adriatic and the Danube basin gives chance for the Anglers not just to fulfill their dreams but also to go beyond that by catching endemic species such as the marble trout.
It is most certainly a four-season fly fishing destination number one in the Balkans. Huchen dreams come true in the autumn and the winter, and all trout-rainbow, brown, and marble can be targetted during spring and summer. Some of the biggest European grayling specimens have also been caught in Slovenia. There are also many hidden pearls of rivers in Slovenia that I would prefer not to share publicly here to avoid spoiling them but will happily take trusted anglers to them.
Slovenians are probably the best example of how with love for the natural world and respect and appreciation of it sustainable fishing tourism can become one of the country’s major incomes. I am proud to be a member of a few fishing clubs in Slovenia and I have learned a lot from Slovenian friends which I am trying to implement amongst other fishing clubs and to other destinations I am visiting in the Balkans.
