Description

The Tara River originates in the highlands of Durmitor National Park, flowing through dramatic alpine landscapes and deep canyons. Its cold, emerald-green waters are framed by steep canyon walls and rugged terrain, creating some of the most spectacular fly-fishing conditions in Europe. The river is divided into several fly-fishing zones, with the upper and middle sections being the most prized by huchen anglers. Here, fast-flowing runs, deep pools, riffles, and pockets formed by large boulders provide perfect holding water for large predatory fish. The Tara offers an unforgettable year-round fly-fishing experience amid one of Montenegro’s most pristine natural environments.

Fish Species

The Tara River is home to a variety of salmonid species, including brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), European grayling (Thymallus thymallus), and the rare Huchen (Hucho hucho).

Brown trout and rainbow trout are the most abundant and provide consistent sport for fly anglers throughout the river. Grayling thrive in many stretches and often reach trophy sizes, making them a highlight for anglers seeking challenging and rewarding catches. Huchen are present in some upper and middle sections of the river, adding the potential for encounters with this elusive predator under strict regulations.

Type of fishing & equipment

The river Tara is ideal for practising all fly fishing methods for trout, grayling and hucho. It is excellent dry fly fishing water. Nymphing, of course, can also be highly effective for all the fish inhabiting the river.  Huchen can be targeted with large streamers.

When you book a trip with us, we will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the fishing techniques and strategies you’ll use, along with a list of the necessary gear.

Season and regulations
