Description

River Ljuča is one of Montenegro’s fly‑fishing gems – a short, clear mountain river flowing from the streams near Gusinje into Plavsko Lake. Its crystal‑clear waters are teeming with aquatic insects, providing excellent feeding conditions for wild trout and grayling. The river’s shallow riffles and deeper pools create a variety of fishing spots, from wade‑friendly runs to secluded pockets ideal for fly presentation.

Ljuča’s healthy fish population and pristine environment make it a must‑visit for anglers seeking both quality and solitude. Spring and early summer bring the most active hatches, while the calm late summer sections are perfect for strategic casting. With accessible banks and unspoiled surroundings, the river offers a rewarding experience for both seasoned fly‑fishers and adventurous beginners exploring Montenegro’s northern highlands.

Fish Species

Brown trout are the most abundant and provide reliable sport for fly anglers throughout the river. Rainbow trout are also present in good numbers, offering additional opportunities for exciting catches. Grayling inhabit many of the river’s clear riffles and deeper pools, often reaching impressive sizes, making them a highlight for anglers seeking challenging and rewarding fishing experiences.

Type of Fishing & Equipment

River Ljuča is ideal for practising all fly fishing methods for brown trout, rainbow trout, and grayling. It offers excellent opportunities for dry fly fishing, especially during hatches of mayflies and caddisflies. Nymphing is highly effective throughout the river, particularly in the deeper pools and faster runs.

Anglers can also experiment with streamers for larger trout or opportunistic grayling, although the river’s modest size favors finesse and precise presentation. When you book a trip, you will receive a full overview of the fishing techniques, strategies, and recommended equipment to make the most of your experience on Ljuča.

Season and regulations

In Montenegro’s fly fishing zones, including River Ljuča, catch and release is mandatory, using fly fishing tackle with only one fly attached to the line. Landing nets are required, and barbless hooks must be used to protect the fish.

Fishing permits can be obtained from the local angling clubs that manage the river in the Plav–Gusinje region. These clubs provide up-to-date information on seasonal closures, fishing conditions, and any special rules to ensure sustainable fishing and the protection of wild fish populations.
