Description

The Poljanska Sora and the Sora River are among Slovenia’s best rivers. Originating in the forested hills above Gorenja vas, the Poljanska Sora flows through scenic alpine-prealpine landscapes before merging with the Selška Sora in Škofja Loka, where the river continues as the Sora toward the Sava.

These rivers feature a dynamic mix of strong currents, deep pools, gravel runs, and undercut banks, creating prime habitat for Hucho hucho. In the lower sections, the Sora widens into long glides and deep holding water that are especially well suited for winter huchen fishing. Despite their accessibility, both rivers retain a wild character and offer an authentic and demanding huchen experience in the heart of Slovenia. They are also an excellent destination for trout fishing in the spring and summer.

Fish Species

The Poljanska Sora and Sora rivers are best known for their strong and naturally sustained population of Huchen (Hucho hucho), the undisputed king of European freshwater rivers. These waters offer ideal conditions for this powerful predator, with deep pools, steady flows, and well-structured riverbeds that support healthy fish throughout the system.

Alongside huchen, the rivers are home to brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and European grayling (Thymallus thymallus), which provide additional fly-fishing opportunities and reflect the overall high water quality. While trout and grayling are more abundant, huchen remains the ultimate challenge, rewarding patience, skill, and dedication.

Type of fishing & equipment

Rods and Lines

The Poljanska Sora and Sora rivers are ideally suited for fly fishing for huchen, offering varied water that demands both precision and strength. Medium to heavy fly rods, typically 9–10 ft, provide the versatility needed for its fast runs, deep pools, and strong currents. Floating lines handle most situations, while intermediate or sink-tip lines are useful in deeper pools or during winter fishing when huchen hold in slow, deep water.

Flies

These rivers reward anglers who adapt their fly selection to changing conditions rather than relying on a single pattern. Streamers are the primary choice for huchen, especially in deep runs and glides, while nymphs and dry flies work well for trout and grayling in calmer sections. Subtle presentation and natural drift are key, as the clear water and educated fish demand careful attention to detail.

Tactic and Strategy

Success on the Sora requires careful water reading and controlled presentation. In the upper and middle reaches, stealthy wading and precise casts along deep pools and undercut banks are essential. In wider stretches, patience and methodical fishing of slower glides often pay off. Many anglers choose to fish with a local guide, particularly for huchen, to better understand seasonal movements, holding water, and tactics needed to target this elusive predator.

Season and regulations

The Poljanska Sora and Sora rivers are divided into fishing zones managed by local clubs, and anglers must fish only on the date and in the zone specified on their licence. Brown trout fishing is open from April to late September, rainbow trout follows a similar season, and grayling can be fished from June to October. The legendary huchen (Hucho hucho) may only be targeted during the designated winter season, from 1 December to 15 February, under special regulations.

Fishing is strictly regulated, and in most zones, fly fishing only is permitted using a single rod with one artificial fly on a barbless hook. Added weights, scented materials, jig hooks, and fishing from boats, bridges, or dams are prohibited. Tributaries and sensitive sections of the rivers are protected and closed unless otherwise stated. Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged, careful fish handling is required, and anglers must maintain a minimum distance of 30 metres from one another.

These rules and controlled access ensure the Poljanska Sora and Sora remain a pristine, sustainable huchen fishery, offering one of Slovenia’s finest fly-fishing experiences.
