If I had to describe Montenegro in one sentence, it would be the country of gorges and canyons. There is a good number of stunningly beautiful rivers in this Balkan country. One of them that I fell in love with at first sight was the river Tara- also known as the Tear of Europe! The Tara River cuts the Tara River Canyon, the longest canyon in Montenegro and Europe and the second longest in the world after the Grand Canyon, at 78 kilometres in length and 1,300 meters at its deepest. The canyon is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A part of the canyon includes the Durmitor National Park.

Another great river full of fish is the Lim River, which starts from Plav Lake. It’s a true Huchen paradise. The whole area is a fly fishing paradise with rivers and lakes full of many different salmonids and cyprinid species of fish that can be targeted on a fly. There are also a few hidden gems of rivers in the country that I will try to find time to include in my list of rivers shortly.

Montenegro is an excellent destination to catch record-size Grayling, some big trout, and lake trout. It is also the ideal place to try huchen fishing for the first time, with a high chance of success. And all this in a budget-friendly frame.
