Unac Waterfall

Location

Unac River flows through western Bosnia and Herzegovina near Martin Brod, within the Central European Time zone (GMT+2).

Spring

It rises from strong karst springs beneath Mount Šator at approximately 700 m above sea level.

Characteristics

A clear karst river of the Black Sea basin, Unac is typically 10–25 m wide with varied depth, steady flow, and sections of canyon, pools, and gentle runs.

Description

Flowing through remote canyons, forested valleys, and open karst fields, this river offers a peaceful and unspoiled fly-fishing environment. Its clear water, stable temperature, and rich oxygen levels create ideal conditions for trout and grayling, while the surrounding wilderness provides a true sense of solitude.

The river alternates between calm glides and deeper pools, allowing anglers to fish a variety of water types in one day. Low fishing pressure and pristine natural surroundings make it an excellent destination for those seeking both quality fishing and untouched scenery.

Fish Species

Healthy populations of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) dominate the river and are present throughout most sections. European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) are also found in suitable habitats, particularly in slower runs and deeper glides.

In deeper sections and selected stretches, hucho (Hucho hucho) may also be encountered, offering an exciting challenge for experienced anglers targeting this powerful and rare species.

Type of fishing & equipment

A variety of fly-fishing techniques can be practised here. Dry fly fishing is productive during regular hatches, especially in calmer stretches where trout rise confidently. Nymphing provides consistent results in runs and deeper channels, while streamer fishing can be effective for larger trout and occasional hucho in deeper pools.

When you book a trip with us, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the most effective fishing techniques and strategies for the Krušnica River, along with a detailed list of recommended rods, lines, flies, and all other necessary equipment to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience on the water.

Season and regulations

The fishing season generally runs from spring through autumn, with the best conditions from May to September. Many sections operate under fly-fishing-only and catch-and-release rules using single barbless hooks, helping preserve the natural populations of trout, grayling, and hucho.
