Overview
The Pirin National Park, located in southwestern Bulgaria within the Pirin Mountains, offers one of Europe’s most unique alpine fly-fishing experiences.
The park contains more than 170 glacial lakes, situated above 2,000 meters in pristine alpine landscapes formed during the last Ice Age. Surrounded by granite peaks, glacial valleys, and alpine meadows, the scenery is spectacular.
Most of these lakes support populations of wild brown and brook trout, perfectly adapted to cold, crystal-clear mountain waters.
Fishing is strictly regulated: only designated lakes are accessible, and only on weekends and bank holidays. This ensures sustainable management of the fragile alpine ecosystem.
The program focuses on dry-fly fishing and streamer techniques for wild brown trout in high-altitude lakes. Connecting mountain streams can also be fished using dry flies and even nymphs, producing excellent results.
Backup plans exist: in case of dangerous weather (storms, strong winds, fog), anglers can fish lower-altitude mountain streams that remain safe and accessible.

Fishing Waters
Pirin Alpine Lakes and streams
High in the Pirin Mountains, more than 170 glacial lakes lie scattered across alpine valleys and rocky ridges, many perched above 2,000 meters. These lakes are often surrounded by jagged peaks, wildflower-filled meadows, and clear mountain streams that tumble down from the heights.
The waters themselves are crystal-clear, providing excellent sight fishing conditions. Some lakes are quiet and intimate, ideal for delicate dry-fly presentations, while others are larger and deeper, where patient anglers can entice larger brown trout with streamer patterns. Small streams connecting the lakes offer lively pockets of water, perfect for exploring different fishing techniques.
Exploring these waters combines hiking through stunning alpine scenery with the thrill of discovering remote fishing spots. Every bend in a trail or clearing by a lake can reveal a new opportunity for a quick cast, making each day a rewarding adventure both on and off the water.
