Hucho Hucho (Where Danube Salmon Dreams Come True–Slovenia)

Huchen, Danube salmon, or as it is scientifically known – Hucho Hucho is the biggest salmonid in Europe and a dream for many anglers. King and Queen of the upper sections of the Danube`s tributaries. It might as well be the biggest freshwater fish you ever catch. Huchen fishing, catching, and releasing should be done with great respect for this magnificent species.

Slovenia should undoubtedly be considered a top place to fulfil your fly fishing dreams. Huchen season opens on the 1st of October and ends on the 14th of February.

It took me many years to start catching this fish on the fly. If I did not have the right mentors, I would probably still be hanging around without great success. Fishing for Huchen is not easy at all. Wintertime fishing conditions can be rough. Being in good physical shape is an advantage, but knowledge of fish behaviour, astronomical sequence, and the ability to read the waters are even more essential.

Simply put, you have to be there at the right time and in the right place. Know what you are doing and do it consistently. This adventure is organized to optimize your chances of catching your next bucket list fish or making another angler’s dream come true.

Trip Description

Flights: The best flight option is to Ljubljana International Airport. While you can also use other airports, such as Zagreb or Venice, please note that additional transportation costs will apply.

Capacity: One guide per 3 persons. A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 anglers can sign per trip. We recommend two anglers per guide ratio to give you the best chance for success.

Fish species: Hucho hucho

Climate: Hucho Season in Slovenia is during late autumn and winter time. Weather can be cold, and minus temperatures and winter conditions are to be expected.

Skill Level Requirements: Intermediate to Advanced anglers. It is recommended that you are in good physical shape. And being able to cast large streamers at a minimum distance of 15 meters.

Price Includes: 

• Transport from Ljubljana International Airport to the rivers and back. Transport during all times.
• Accommodation- 6 nights in a beautiful family Hotel with an excellent restaurant in the old town of Radovljica (The Hucho Capital of Slovenia). The price is based on double rooms. Single rooms can booked on request.
• Fishing Locations- We will fish the Sora, Poljanska Sora, Sava & Sava Bohinjka rivers.
• Breakfast and dinner will be served at the accommodation, or we can visit local restaurants. Lunch will be pre-packed or cooked on the river.
• Fishing licenses for 5 days.
• Guiding
• Insurances – tourist insurance and insurance for travelling abroad.

Price Does Not Include:

• Flight tickets to and from Ljubljana, Belgrade, or Zagreb airport.
• Alcohol.
• Fishing equipment (equipment can be rented for 50 EU per day).

Other Expenses:
Expenses of personal character. Souvenirs.

• Day 1

Picking you up from Ljubljana International Airport. Checking in at the place for Accommodation. Preparation for the next day.

• Day 2 to day 6

When fishing on one of the rivers (Sava, Sava Bohinjka, Sora), we recommend following this daily routine based on current conditions and the professional guide’s recommendations:

Morning:

• 5:00 AM: Wake up and prepare for the day.
• 6:00 AM: Enjoy breakfast and finalize preparations.
• 6:30 AM: Head to the water and start fishing as soon as local regulations allow.

Midday:

• Noon: We will take a break for lunch. We can eat at a nearby restaurant or enjoy a riverside lunch or BBQ.

Afternoon:

• 5:30 PM: Conclude fishing for the day following local rules and return to your accommodation for dinner and relaxation.

Flexibility: While we recommend this schedule to maximize your fishing success, feel free to adjust your wake-up time and fishing schedule to suit your preferences. We’re here to ensure you have an enjoyable experience!

Return to Ljubljana International Airport.
